How judging works

Blind tasting by an international panel, and what happens to your sample after check-in.

Updated

Every oil in the NYIOOC is tasted blind by an international panel of expert judges.

From check-in to the tasting table

  1. Staff check in your samples and give each one a check-in number.

  2. Your sample is assigned anonymous codes, so judges never see the brand, producer or country.

  3. When the sample is prepared for the judges, your entry shows Analysis Pending.

  4. Judges taste and assess the oil, and their assessments are reviewed by the competition team.

Intensity categories

Each oil is placed in an intensity category, which you'll see with your result:

  • Delicate

  • Medium

  • Robust

Awards

Oils can receive a Gold Award or a Silver Award. Oils that don't reach an award receive No Award. Oils with sensory defects are marked Defective.
